What is bloating?

Bloating is when your tummy feels full and tight, often due to gas. People might confuse bloating with other reasons for a more noticeable tummy, such as abdominal wall laxity, or looseness. This is common, especially among older women and those with children. It’s important to know the difference so you can get the right treatment. A toned abdomen can make it easier to see a difference when the gut is full of food or stool.

What causes bloating?

There are several causes of bloating, including constipation, which is one of the most common. You might not realise you’re constipated, even if you have regular bowel movements. Symptoms of constipation include straining to start or finish a bowel movement, stool that looks like ‘rocks’ and pebbles, and not feeling empty after a bowel movement. Constipation can lead to abdominal pain and bloating, as the longer stool stays in your colon, the more time bacteria have to ferment what’s there, resulting in more gas and bloating. Other causes of bloating include gut sensitivity, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), gastroparesis, and gynaecological conditions.

How can you treat bloating?

The first step is typically to change your diet. To make this an easier process, Vivitality offers the Foodmarble Toxicity Test  which will help you get ahead of bloating by identifying potential triggers.

This test simply works by taking a baseline breath sample, which serves as a control measure, afterwards you eat a small amount of a certain type of food and take subsequent breath samples at timed intervals.

We analyse the breath samples to determine how well you digested that food. If the test shows that you have not digested a certain food well, we will recommend avoiding that food, or suggest dietary changes to improve digestion. The Foodmarble Toxicity test is designed to help you with digestive issues, such as bloating, and will help to identify problematic foods and manage their symptoms. Instead of guessing which foods are causing you problems, the Foodmarble Toxicity Test gives us profound results, allowing us to improve your diet and overall well-being accordingly.
